Sterling: Hello and welcome to Internet Business Mastery online at InternetBusinessMastery.com. I’m Sterling….
Jay: And I’m Jay.
Sterling: And we’re here to help you escape the ‘9 to 5′ and live the lifestyle of your dreams by turning your life passion into a profitable internet business – especially if you’re just getting started today.
Now on this episode, we’re going to talk about the seven reasons people don’t succeed in internet business, and how you can avoid every single one. We’re going to go ahead and give you a free tool for doing critical stat tracking on your site.
So you were just here Jay, why don’t you tell everybody why you flew back to Salt Lake to visit with me other than try to watch romantic comedies?
Jay: I can’t believe that…
Yeah, romantic comedies…gosh. Yeah so, well I had a little trip to Salt Lake City to your stomping ground. We went and met with a $140 million-dollar-a-year information marketing related business there. It’s interesting how many of those businesses actually reside there in what we call the Wasatch Front, Salt Lake City in the environments up and down the mountains there. But it was really interesting to go and see their outfit, and they had some stuff they wanted to pitch to us, and that was pretty cool.
But one of the things I found super interesting just seeing this operation, because it’s very large scale – sales floor, lots of employees, lot of people – big brand new building. They take tons of phone calls and huge volume of sales, so because they’re in a related industry to what we do, I was really interested to kind of ask the question – well how is the “economic situation” affecting your business? Because of course we hear lots of this and that, and the other on the news, but there’s always plenty of span and really when it comes down to it, it’s in the numbers that we can see the truth.
But he said the truth of the matter is that things are just as good as ever. He talked about how in that business a lot of people are willing to lose money on acquiring a lead, and then make that money back up in selling back in stuff, but how most of this year they’ve been not losing money, in fact gaining money on getting leads and then selling more stuff on the back end.
But right now they’re still more than cutting even on acquiring those leads. And so that’s better than historically in the industry. So that was really interesting, he said, “Yeah, the way you put it is there’s always money in the pool, you’ve just got to know where to go to get in the path of it.” And he did say that…and I found this very interesting…he said that they’d seen a shift in the customer demographic, meaning that…because I was wondering…I was like okay well, this is business opportunity type stuff that you guys are selling. They had eBay stuff, and real estate investing stuff, and so I was thinking well, with a credit crunch it seems like maybe they’d spend less on those kinds of opportunities.
And he said well the truth of the matter is it’s kind of shifting and now instead of people digging in on their credit card to buy this stuff, it’s more your middle America, middle management kind of person who’s calling up because they’re realizing it’s like wow, you know what? Corporate America and the status quo is not the security I always thought it was. And it’s been a real wake up call, so now they’re actually going, “Where else can I look to find other opportunities to find more freedom, take more control of my own circumstances in my life, and my finances?”
And so this whole stepping outside of the status quo is not seeming like such a maybe risky thing to them because they’re seeing the risks that they’re experiencing in this supposed even keel employee life. And I’ve found that information really interesting. So I don’t know what your impressions were as we were walking around and chatting with them about the stuff, but that definitely really struck me to hear some of that, and to know that now just as much as ever, there’s still money in the pool.
And if you are a savvy entrepreneur, and running a viable business in the information marketing, there’s just as much money to be made as ever. And especially if you’ve got those entrepreneurial skills and marketing type skills that we talk about here on Internet Business Mastery.
Sterling: Yeah, I was really interested to see a completely different business plan, because he had this brand new building, and in fact to me it looked like a movie set on every floor. So you had like a sales floor that’s the entire floor, and then he’s got these guys over here – this is the tech department, and customer service, and shipping, and just all these different departments. And just being a brand new building, and they obviously had a designer look – really snazzy.
So it looked really cool, but it was interesting to walk around and as he’s talking about the different departments and all the stuff that goes into it – hundreds of employees of course – and the interesting part of it for me was when we got back to his office, and he’s pitching this stuff and talking about things, and we’re saying wow, yeah this business is incredibly impressive.
And I liked it when he said, “Yeah, and in the end I’m very proud of this business, but I’d rather be doing what you guys do!” I loved that because you’re talking to somebody…now his business, the business makes 140 million dollars or whatever it is a year, but who knows what he ends up taking after and what percentages with partners and all that kind of stuff.
And in the end he’s got to be there to manage everybody, and even manage the managers who manage the regular employees. And he was saying, “Yeah, employees…” Oh my gosh, imagine with hundreds and hundreds of employees as well what you have to go through to get that money. And so it was interesting to have somebody that I was so impressed walking around go, “Yeah, in the end the fact that you guys can go and do what you want all day and all that kind of stuff, that’s what I’d like.”
I was just going, wow. That was the part that struck me the most in terms of him looking at us going, “Wow guys, I wish I was you!” And I was sitting there going, look at this place! This is amazing! So that was a very cool thing, and it says a lot about thinking about lifestyle when you’re trying to design your future and design what it is that you’re going to do with your life.
That was one of the things he and I had talked about before; I’ve known him for a while now. And we had talked about before nobody’s talking about, “Well before you design a business or design what you want to do with your life, what kind of lifestyle do you want? How do you want your day to look?” Nobody talks about that kind of thing.
Nobody taught that in college, nobody’s talking about this stuff. So it’s definitely interesting and another thing that I’m sure he was really enjoying about what we do, is making people think about this stuff before they get into business, so they don’t design this business that becomes this monster that takes over their life, and now they work twelve hours a day again and they’re just their own boss.
Jay: Yeah it’s important to think about those things. And it was very eye-opening to see somebody that pursued a different path, and certainly there are things…for a moment I was very envious about it, and seeing it’s like wow yeah, it would be cool to walk in and have a whole team of people to just be like, “Hey everybody do this!” But when it came down to it, it was like yeah, you know I don’t know if I would give up the flexibility required for that.
But whether you’re going for the 140 million dollar-a-year business or the one person just to make more than enough for your own needs even if it’s not 140 million a year, it’s just important to think about those things now. And of course there’s a number of obstacles that people run into as they move along, but the way in that we wanted to talk about some of those on this episode and some of those reasons that we’ve seen why people don’t succeed in internet business is either statistics like 80% of home based businesses fail in the first year or whatever the case might be.
But the cool thing is that if you know the main reasons why those people might fail in that first year, you can now make it so that you fall into that 20% who do succeed and drastically increase the chances that you will succeed. So we’re going to go through some of those reasons in this episode – why people don’t succeed in internet business and how you can avoid every one of those reasons and increase your chances of success.
So let’s jump right into that.
And now the featured segment…
Jay: Alright so what are the seven reasons that we’ve come up here why people don’t succeed? And you know we’ve thought back over our own experience, we’ve been at this several years ourselves now, and we’ve thought back over a lot of the different people that we’ve interacted with.
And in our time in Internet Business Mastery, we’ve seen a lot of people pursuing this and what propels them forward, and maybe what obstacles they’ve run into. And with the Academy we’ve had the opportunity to continually interact with people who are starting with the ground floor up, and trying to get things going.
And so we’ve noticed some of these different reasons why different people get hung up at times. I think probably all seven of these are things that I’ve dealt with myself. I don’t about you, Sterling, you tend to be perfect; you get right to the success right away right?
Sterling: Oh I wish.
Jay: So let’s go ahead and jump into these; and the first one is they don’t know why they’re doing it. Because we touched on this in the opening segment, our chit chat segment there, about knowing what it is that you want to create when you start an internet business and a lot of people, they jump in. And they think, “Oh, I just want to make more money, I just want more money so I can buy fancy things.”
And you know, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I think people need to know really specifically why they want to start internet business, why they want to leave their job, why they want to do something on their own. And this is stuff like the definite major purpose that we’ve talked about on the show as well as extensively in the Academy, and this is why we’ve created an entire first course in the Academy just talks about the ‘why’ of internet business, and the ‘why’ to create this kind of thing, and what your definite major purpose is, and what freedom looks like for you, and what fulfills you.
Because it’s important when you do hit those obstacles to know very specifically what it is that you’re going for. And I definitely noticed in my pursuits and freedom…and when I first quit my job I was doing real estate investing at first. And I did okay in that, but it never quite took off for me, and I think one of the big reasons why – is the only reason I had for doing it was money.
I thought oh, I know a lot of people who are making good money in real estate investing. I was desperate to get out of my job, but it didn’t fulfill me when it came down to it. When I started thinking about it, I was still lacking having the opportunity to teach other people. And just the online aspect appealed to me for so many more reasons, because my technical background, it appealed to that.
And the way you can market online appealed to me, so I found myself so much more fulfilled when I got into doing online business rather than online investing, and so it brought a lot more freedom because the fulfillment was coming along with that as well, and so I started doing better in my business. So that’s why we talk about the definite major purpose so much, is it’s important to know why you are doing this.
And if you don’t, even if money is your only thing that you’re going for, then when you hit those obstacles it’s going to be very easy to just fall back into old patterns, and quit, or just give up and have a hard time finding that motivation to surmount the little things that come along, because they will come along, but they are surmountable if you know what you’re doing.
Sterling: Well for me, the thing that I first started was, I started a little business on eBay, and it was physical products. So they actually had to be made, which took a lot of time and effort. And the only kind of goal I had was to make enough money so I didn’t have to go back to work, because I did it kind of the super risky way and just quit my job, and went, “I’m going to make it work!” and just did it. So I was like okay well, I’ve got to make this happen really fast.
So at the time I didn’t think to myself, what kind of lifestyle would I want? I was just like, I don’t want to go back to work. But the problem with just thinking that was when success did happen, then I’m working 12 hours a day trying to keep up with it. And it still was just enough to live off of at first.
So it wasn’t like I could hire five people to help me, it was me and my wife at the time fulfilling orders. And that actually, we didn’t know why we were doing it other than the fact we were just trying to pay the bills. And again I was like wow, I made much better money in my profession, and I worked less.
Now I work more and make less, this kind of sucks! So it wasn’t until I started going okay, well I see this, there’s different ways that I made it all work, and I took the eBay business to just online and switched it over so that people were just coming to my site instead of eBay and all this other stuff. I switched it to learn about this, and then I started going well gosh, I don’t want this lifestyle anymore, this working twelve hours and having to fulfill stuff, so it was a matter now what is my purpose?
Why am I doing this? There’s got to be more than just the money, especially if it’s just survival money. It doesn’t last long thinking that’s cool. You don’t think to yourself, “Wow I just paid the bills this month, that’s it. I’ve worked really hard for it, great!” You know even if I’m home, if you’re working the whole time what does it matter?
So yeah I did it wrong the first time as well, I made that mistake as well. And now so the solution we have for this is to create your definite major purpose. You want to know what will fulfill you other than just the money.
Jay: Alright so number two is one I definitely relate with, and it still gets me every once in a while. But I hear over and over again with people trying to get into internet business, and that is they just get overloaded with all the information. So number two is information overload.
And I think it is smart when you first are getting interested in something, you’re excited about it, and you’re just devouring information at every angle. You’re reading books, you’re getting on email newsletters; you’re just trying to absorb whatever you can. And that’s probably not a bad idea, you can learn things very quickly, you can get into the game, gain some confidence because you’ve got some foundational information.
But then the problem is that that phase doesn’t end at an appropriate moment, meaning that if you just continue to devour information from every angle and take in all these email newsletters every day when somebody’s saying, “Oh my gosh! This week I made “x” thousand or “x” million dollars doing this!”
And you’re like oh, I should be doing that! And then it’s so easy to get distracted when that is the case. It’s very detrimental to progress, because really in the end what’s ultimately going to move you forward is focus. And this is where knowing why you’re doing it can help because it can help you choose the thing that you should focus on.
So what we recommend here is that you want to pick…people don’t only pick one system, a source of help or information and stick to it, they’ve got ten people they’re listening to all at once, and in the end they don’t know who to listen to. It’s whoever’s making the most noise in their inbox at the moment. So you find yourself going all over the place.
And early on for a limited amount of time it’s okay to do that, but you’ve got to know when to stop and go okay, now I’m going to focus. And to help people for instance, in the Academy to overcome this, even people that come to the one particular place, and they’ve chosen the Academy as their place to go and learn, even there we wanted to make sure they weren’t getting overloaded with information.
So we made these weekly action guides that the average person with a full time job could go through, just bit by bit and just say okay you know what? Here’s what you can do with the few hours you have set aside this week, you should just these four or five things and that’s it.
Yes there’s multiple, several different courses, but everything is laid out chronologically, don’t look forward, don’t look back, just do this right now. Because it’s interesting, sometimes we’ll talk to somebody in the Academy, and they’re like, “Hey, this traffic course that I was thinking about buying, should I get it?”
I got an email like this a couple weeks ago, and somebody asked me this, and I said, “Well is your site up yet?” And they said, “No, no, I’m not there yet.” “Have you chosen your niche yet?” And they’re like, “Well kinda, but I’m just kind of dialing it in a bit.” And it’s like, well okay, then you’re not to the point of needing traffic.
And we’ll even get there, and even though we would have made money on commission by them buying this course, I said, “No, don’t buy the course because it’s going to be overload, you’re not there yet. So just stop and focus.” And they took that turn and said, “Okay, that’s great. I’ll hold off on that and just keep chucking away at what I’ve got.”
And you know, this is something I learned when I was in real estate investing is that at first it’s tough because you’re like oh, somebody’s talking about buying and rehabbing houses, and flipping them. Or some people are talking about buying old decrepit houses and wholesaling them to people who want to fix them up.
Or you’ve got subject to and short sales, and all these different directions you can go, and it wasn’t until I said okay, I’m going to focus on short sales, that’s it. I’m going to find houses in foreclosure and work our deals on them and that’s it. And that actually made some money in real estate investing.
So that focus and knowing when to turn off the faucet and just take the info as you need it, the information diet, and follow through with it methodically from one source and one system is critical to overcoming this barrier that I think it’s all of us at some point. And the important thing is to be able to recognize it and stop it in the moment that you do see that it’s something that you’re facing.
Sterling: Yeah, and this was yet another problem that I was having at first, I bought just tons of courses, and I was reading as many blogs as I could. I was on a hundred email newsletters, just wasn’t able to keep up every day. And instead of actually taking action, I was just printing stuff out and reading it, and highlighting it.
And putting it in this pile was the ‘to read’ pile, and this was the ‘take action’ pile, and both of them were just always full, and nothing was ever getting done. So I did the exact same thing. Now the solution to this of course is to unsubscribe from the email newsletter and the hundred million blogs you’re attached to and just pick one system or course that fits your style.
Now Lindsay B. of WritingForYourWealth.com has three questions to answer before you buy a ‘How to Make Money’ system. And here they are: number one – do you trust and identify with the person selling the system? Number two – does the author of the system actually do what he teaches, and could he duplicate his success today?
This is actually a really good one because there’s a lot of people saying stuff, and they’ve never done anything. And a lot of books are written like that, they just research it, and then they write something, or their success system is from seven years ago when the internet started. That one always kills me; they made their money right when it started when nobody else was out there competing.
And now they’re teaching the system from all the way back then. Anyway, that’s very important there. And number three – have you already purchased other ‘How to Make Money’ systems and if so, did you do anything with them? Yet another important thing.
That’s where I ended up sitting down finally and going wow, I’ve got four systems I paid big money for. And I went through them and decided which one I was going to do, and when it started happening for me, it was because I went, I’m just going to do this one and see if it works.
And lucky for me, it worked enough that it got me started. And then of course I created all the stuff around it, but it wasn’t until I actually sat down and said I’m not going to keep learning stuff until I take action on every single step.
Jay: Yeah that’s such a simple…those three things she brought up, and I saw her share that in Twitter. And she’s a member of the Academy, so I took notice of her name and said oh, I’m going to go check this out. And it was so simple, those three things, it was like yeah…a lot of people could benefit from just listening to those three steps right there, because I know I’ve been bitten by that every time, or at least once I should say in the past in looking and deciding which system to go with and where to get my information from.
Alright, the number three thing that holds people back or the reason they fail is because they don’t act fast enough. So here’s the deal, we’ve talked a lot about taking quick and bold action in the past, and it may just sound like some hype or trying to get you all excited.
But there’s a very important reason, I think there’s a number of reasons, but the number one is that as quickly as possible you need to get proof to your mind that you can do something; that something works. And even if it’s just small little incremental successes at a time, it’s really important to get that as quickly as possible, because if you just sit there in a theoretical world with the information overload – and that’s probably one reason why people are so afraid to exit the information overload, it’s because then they actually have to start acting.
But it’s an amazing thing, when you start taking small steps, it starts showing that proof to your mind, it’s like wow, this does work. I can do this, wow bit by bit I am going to arrive at this goal. And we’ve had some people for instance take our coaching course in the past, and then when they share feedback or testimonials or whatever afterwards, they’re like wow, it actually worked!
It’s like yeah, you just had to do it! And then they’re like wow cool, now I feel like I can go out and really make all these things happen that I’ve always wanted to.
Sterling: That always makes me laugh, I love that. “It actually works!” I’m like, what do think? But of course they’ve gone out and tried other things, or started and didn’t finish other things. So of course they’re thinking well, I guess it’s sure going to be like that. And we’re like, uh no, it actually works. We’ve done it multiple times!
Jay: Yeah, so make sure that you’re not in that mode of being afraid to act because it’s easy to think as long as I’m in learning mode, I can’t fail because I’m not acting. And that’s a big ‘gotchya,’ and I understand the fear and the feeling there, but the truth of the matter is if you just start little bit by little bit – and there will be some stumbles and things – but if you just keep acting as quickly as possible, very soon you’re going to start having those little successes that just make…it’s so cool when somebody starts their first email list, like it the Academy or something, and they’re just like, “Oh my gosh! Today I got my first three opt ins!”
And it might be easy to take something like that for granted after you’ve been doing internet business for a while. But to them, that’s the biggest thing, they’re like, “I put something on the internet, and three people decided today that they thought it was cool and they wanted more.”
And that’s so thrilling, and that kind of proof to yourself is invaluable when it just comes to pressing forward and finding that motivation. So make sure you don’t have that fear of acting overtake you, and don’t mix up the whole accomplishing thing for actually getting results. And what I mean by that is, it’s really easy to be like oh well I read ten blogs today, so I got something done. Well it’s like okay, well what did you do with that information? So just keep those things in mind.
Sterling: Okay, so the solution? Act fast and take consistent action.
Jay: Alright, number four, the fourth reason people don’t succeed is they’re not willing to make it a priority. Now there’s two phrases that we all here on a consistent basis, and your friends and your family might say it to you. And I’m sure you’ve said it to many people, I know I say it sometimes too and that is, “I don’t have the time or I don’t have the money.”
And over time, I’ve learned that these two phrases essentially mean it’s just not really a priority for me. When I hear myself saying that, or when I hear somebody saying that to me, what I immediately interpret in my mind is – it’s just not a priority for me.
And that’s okay, you know what? That might be okay as long as the person knows that it’s not a priority, and they’re making that conscious decision, and it’s not an excuse or whatever. And I definitely try to make sure when I hear myself say oh, I don’t have the time, I try to evaluate in that moment. It’s like okay, am I just saying that?
Is this really that important to me that I should make the time, I guess what I’m trying to say is as long as you’re being deliberate about your priorities and hence about the usage of your money and time in those priorities, fine. But it’s so easy to just rattle off those phrases, “Oh I don’t have the time” or “later when I’ve got the time,” or “maybe when I get a little more money,” that they often become excuses.
They’re just these things that we throw out there basically as excuses. So that can really be dangerous, so just be deliberate about your priorities, and pay attention to when you say those “I don’t have time,” or “I don’t have money.” And even when you do get into some action, and maybe spending a little bit of time or a little bit of money on these things, the problem then is that you might treat it more like a hobby than really a business.
And maybe you can explain a little what I mean by this, I know you like talking about how there was a point in Internet Business Mastery and I remember you one day saying, “You know what? We’re treating this like a hobby.” So maybe you can explain a little bit about that.
Sterling: Well yeah, there’s two things I was going to mention, and the first was – I’ve got a friend here in Salt Lake, every time I talk to him, he just loves talking about the internet business. He’s got just a regular day job, a cubicle job, but wants to do internet business so bad, and every time we’ve talked for the last three years, he asks me all about it and wants me to tell him all about it.
And when I say, “Oh, so have you done the thing I mentioned last time?” He’ll go, “Oh, I just don’t have the time yet.” But then later in the conversation, he’ll talk about the six hours he spent last week playing the new video game online. And that’s where we’re saying too, he obviously hasn’t made that a priority.
And I just wanted to mention that really quick first, and then as far as Internet Business Mastery, a couple years in…and in fact it was a hobby at first, but then when we decided that we wanted to…we saw that it was growing in popularity, and people were listening and loving it, and emailing us about it, and we were getting noticed for it, we decided to turn it into a business.
But we were still kind of treating it the same way we did when it was just a podcast that we did for fun, which when you’re going to do something as a business, it’s very different than a hobby. Even if you’re doing a business about a hobby, you’ve still got to treat it as a business.
So that’s kind of what we were talking about, we had to both finally decide, this is our priority as one of our internet businesses.
Sterling: Something else comes to mind as we’re talking about this and that is it might have been last week, or the week before; I was chatting a little bit with one of the members of the Internet Business Mastery Academy, and he said, “You know, I’m loving the Internet Business Mastery Academy,” and he was telling me a couple of things he liked that we’d added to it and stuff.
And then he says, “The funny thing is I’ve been thinking about canceling my cable TV in order to save some money and force me to focus on my business building.” And then right after that he says, “But I cannot imagine ever imagining canceling my Internet Business Mastery Academy membership.” And he said, “So hopefully that’s good for you to hear.”
And I’m thinking well yeah, I love hearing that but mostly because that says a lot about you and I know you’re going to be able to succeed. And sure that means that somebody else is paying us money for the Academy, but even more so it’s awesome. I mean that says so much about the priorities, and this whole ‘I don’t have time,’ and ‘I don’t have money,’ not that it’s bad to watch a TV show every now and again, but there he was making a deliberate statement about his priorities.
He’s like look it matters to me to have my business grow, and the Academy is having an impact on my life, I would rather cancel my cable TV than cancel my membership in the Academy. So he was making a deliberate choice about his priorities, and one that I think is very geared towards absolutely succeeding in his internet business.
So number four was not willing to make it a priority. And what is our solution for this?
Sterling: Decide what your priorities are and make sacrifices accordingly.
Jay: Okay, so there are the first four of the seven reasons why people fail, and how you can avoid every single one of them. We are splitting this into a two-parter, because it is something that deserves the time to go through each of them thoroughly. So we’ll be back for part two of the seven reasons in the next episode for the final three reasons why people often do not succeed in internet business and how you can avoid those pitfalls yourself.
But in the meantime, we definitely encourage you to evaluate those first four there and look at those solutions, and see if one of those is not possibly holding you up right now from reaching the next level. Whether it’s getting started or just reaching the next level in your internet business, and implements that solution right away.
It’s time for the Internet Business Quick Tip…
Jay: Alright, on this episode’s Business Quick Tip, we’ve got a little tool that we’ve actually been diving into even much more lately. And it’s something we’ve been running on our site for quite some time. But lately with the kind of moving things forward with the Academy and our marketing things, it’s been very critical to get more diligent about testing and tracking, a very critical element in any marketing and sales campaign.
So you’ve got to have good metrics, good statistics on your site. And our chosen tool for this is Google Analytics, which can provide probably more information than most people need about their website. It does lots of stuff in Google, I’m always discovering new little corners and nooks and crannies of the Google Analytic system, some more fascinating than others.
But you know, at the very least it’s an easy way to know where is your traffic coming from, how long are people spending time on your site, and even recently I discovered it will tell you, it will give you an overlay analysis of say your home page or something, and where people are clicking as similar to Crazy Egg, which is something else we’ve talked about in the past Quick Tip.
So lots of great stuff with Google Analytics, and it’s free. It has many of the great Google tools, so if you’ve got a free Google account set up, you can go ahead and start that up on your own site.
So to go to Google Analytics, it’s Analytics.Google.com (not the easiest word to remember), or if you just type in Google for ‘Google Analytics,’ it will come up as well. So highly recommend getting that set up on your site if you don’t have some form of stats or metrics. Stats and metrics is critical, so get that going. Even now if you’re not in a mode of analyzing things and doing anything with it, even if it’s a year down the road, it will be great to have the historical data that you can look at and help you make some decisions when you are ready to use that kind of information.
