Hey guys,

Are you guys reading my mind? Stop it! Great little episode..

I do had a quick question. As a producer of information products, I’d like to know if you have any general tips on how to gather affiliates to run with selling my own products. That question is really for everyone, not just Jay and Sterling, but I’d love to hear their views as well. Thanks!

Killer episode. I tried using CJ as my affiliate host and got rejected. A slap in the face. They said we were too new, didn’t produce enough revenue per month to justify them doing business. We’re in the printing and direct mail service business and need to have affiliates sell for us. I was puzzled and haven’t since tried to get a program up. Any encouragement or words of advice are appreciated. Keep up the great work!

Hey Sterling / Jay -

First off, I love your show (listen to it weekly on my commute to school) and your marketing advice and tips have helped me begun developing a side project of mine into something that may actually bring in some income. I started AdGridwork.com about a year as a resource for website owners and bloggers to freely promote their websites. I never imagined that the site would gain much traction and did it mainly as a grassroots/can-i-do-it project. Now, Im the number one rank on Google for ‘Free Advertising’ and have a community of over 20,000 webmasters who use my service. However, as I had no background in marketing (kinda ironic for someone creating an Ad platform, right :) ) I really didn’t know how to tap into my community to pull in some income. However, about two weeks ago, I signed up for Aweber via your recommendation and have slowly begun importing my list into an optin (big mistake on my part in not doing this from the beginning, but as I said, I had no knowledge of any of this stuff), 2000 leads at a time. I’m seeing around a 5-10% conversion on these optins which is expected as some of the members have not been active in a while. I’m almost done importing these users into the list and will then shift over to adding the optin form directly into my registration system which gets about 50-100 new users a day. Anyways, I was just wondering if you had any advice on what types of offers these users might be interested in? I wrote up some copy for the MSN Adcenter / Yahoo PPC free clicks and will use these in my auto-responder. A lot of these users are just getting started in their business / web endeavors so I doubt they have the funds to invest in any type of serious marketing course and I don’t want to suggest anything that I haven’t personally tested myself. So I’m turning to the Iconoclasts of the 9-to-5 to offer some suggestions on something to offer webmasters who are just starting out and looking for some cheap, but effective promotion. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, guys, and keep pumping out those podcasts!

Hi Sterling and Jay – another great episode, thanks. I’m pretty new to the affiliate side of things and we receive quite a number of emails asking for us to set up an affiliate programme for the Coffee Break Spanish products, etc. Can you give me an idea of what kind of percentage I should be looking at for items, and should this differ depending on the overall cost of items? Any thoughts or ideas from the community are most welcome!

@Mark,

Primero, escucho su podcast! In episode #36 you probably heard me mention how one of my primary resources for learning Spanish (since I am moving to Buenos Aires) was a podcast. Well, I was referring to yours!

I really enjoy your approach. I’ve listened to several of the Spanish podcasts and so far yours is the best. I was also impressed by your premium content model. In fact, I believe I mentioned and linked to your site from my podcast consulting blog a few weeks ago.

Regarding affiliate commissions, these usually range from 10%-30% and can even go as high as 50%. I usually reserve the 50% commissions for joint venture partners that have big lists and I really want to attract to promoting my product.

When the product you are selling is a continuity program (ongoing payments), you could offer a percentage on the lower end (10-15%) but make it so that it pays out to the affiliate every month that the referred buyer stays active. This continuous income is very attractive to affiliates.

For managing our affiliates we use our shopping cart service (http://www.getyourshoppingcart.com).

BTW, when you do start your affiliate program I’m interested in signing up. My wife and I will be launching a new site soon and one thing we’ll be recommending is language programs.

Hola Jason – ¡cuánto me alegro! I had heard you mentioning the Spanish podcast you were listening to, but it was the reference to “the guy and his girlfriend” which made me think it wasn’t CBS you were listening to! Kara would be horrified at that thought – she’s the daughter of a family friend!! My wife is nonetheless involved in our podcasting ventures and holds the fort when I’m on my day-job commitments, not to mention hosting our My Daily Phrase German podcast!

Muchas gracias por tus ideas about affiliate programmes. I’m looking into various options. I’ll keep you posted!

¡Saludos desde Escocia!

@Mark,

How funny. I think the girlfriend mentions were in reference to Shaun and his girlfriend who do the http://www.LearningIndonesian.com podcast.

Regardless, I definitely think having a student co-host the podcast with you ads a nice dynamic that keeps it interesting (that and your Scottish accents when you speak English;).

@Shaun,

The best thing to do is what we are doing–turn to your listeners and community. Especially invite your customers to be affiliates.

@Nick,

One affiliate product that you can offer to webmasters that comes immediately to mind that is also profitable is web hosting.

This has been a terrific set of resources for me. We are just starting our Internet Business and have found more to do from your site than we have time to set up. I appreciate all the great advice, and plan to keep learning and trying to apply all that you have taught us. Thanks!
