Started using Freemind and love this form of planning/organization. I was about to start a new map to create my first internet business when it dawned on me… Sterling and Jay have probably done this a thousand times already. Why reinvent the wheel? Another idea is to have links to your other social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook, etcetera) or to use tools like Twitter Tools to include their feeds directly on your blog site. You can also allow people to instant message you directly from your site by using tools like Meebo.com’s “Meebo Me”. My recommendation for something like that is to have a set time per day or per week that you will always be available so your potential customers can plan ahead.

Thank you, Jay, for sharing your plans for Buenos Aries. I think this is also helps you build a relationship with your readers/listeners as they get to know you better. My wife and I have been loosely planning a similar extended trip to New Zealand.

Totally off the topic of this post, how did Jay decide internet marketing over real estate? I am dabbling in real estate myself and have been for around 6 months now. I see it as great at building assets and equity, not that great at building income which is what will allow me to quit my JOB. Any thoughts appreciated.

We should put together a generic example of a business planning mindmap to share. Anything that we currently have would have information in it that we don’t want floating around the internet. But we’ll definitely keep that in mind as a future resource.

Switching to internet business over real estate investing was a choice I made based on passion and interest. Internet business just appealed to me more. It also allowed me to live the kind of lifestyle that I preferred. Eventually real estate will play back into my wealth-building plans.

hey Guys,
My question is about submitting blog URLs to Google. Is it necessary, or good practice to submit to Google the URL of each individual blog entry?
Thanks to your show I started a new blog to go with the launch of my new website.
I’ve put a link to your show on the site and have written about IBM on the blog.

Steve,

It is definitely not necessary to submit every blog entry to Google. In fact, with their new, improved indexing (which finds most new pages within minutes), you may not need to submit anything again. I know for a fact that every post I make shows up pretty darn quickly on Google.

Hey Jay and Sterling,
Have you heard of anyone having trouble with your podcast feed? It is the only feed in my list of subscriptions within the juice client that has problems. Juice constantly tries to re-download episodes even though it has them all and then i get a bunch of .partial files in the download directory. Again, all other feeds seem to be fine.

That reminds me, I wanted to tell Jay & Sterling, I can’t get their feed on iTunes anymore, it used to work there but now it doesn’t, other feeds subscribed to work there fine so it’s not my PC.
But it works fine in Googlereader for me.

I have tried deleting the directory once before and starting again – I can try again – i wonder if part of the issue is that the directory name is so long….

Update – i tried to move all files, unsubscribe and resubscribe. Didn’t work. Issue is that juice always says files are partially downloaded and tries to download them again even though the files are indeed fully downloaded…Something strange is going on because again, no other feed does this.

I’m not a big supporter of Web 2.0…not that the rest of the world cares if I’m a supporter or not.

It seems that Web 2.0 and the associated sites have become the “hot buzz” recently and there is a lot more weight given to them (at least in amount of content devoted to the subject) than is truly deserved.

Anyone that is charting a course to make Internet Marketing a cornerstone in their business better not forget the basics:

1) BUILD YOUR LIST! – Never forget that your newsletter list is still the most important link in the relationship chain that binds you to your customer. Web 2.0 tactics do not compare to this in importance in my opinion.

2) Start a Blog – I agree with these guys 100% that you need to incorporate a Blog (preff WordPress) as your second priority. Your blog gets your foot in the door of the Web 2.0 world by default and you can build your business around it if you need to. Also you can comment on your blog posts in your email Newsletter and vice-versa making it easy to reinforce themes you are communicating to your audience.

I feel that only after you have these two crucial elements fused into your business and working like a well-oiled machine should you worry about things like Digg, Reddit, YouTube etc. These “hot” topics can become a distraction for the new Internet Business Developer.

I’ll see if I get some time to look into the Juice problem. I have to admit, though, less than 1% of our listeners use it and it is no longer being developed so it might not be right away. I apologize for any convenience. You could also try Google Reader for subscribing to the show if you are not a fan of iTunes.

I agree with you…almost 100%. It all comes down to how you define Web 2.0 and why you think it’s important.

The main reason Web 2.0 is important is not as much the traffic generation benefits (although that is also significant), but that it provides numerous tools for relationship building.

Yes building the list is important, but more important is the principle underneath that BUILD RELATIONSHIPS with your community.

Yes, the email list is still a key tool for starting a relationship. But Internet Business Mastery has succeeded because we have used the podcast and blog to build stronger interactive ties than you can with just an email or mailing list.

Actually, your comment has inspired an episode of the show. This is an important topic. You’ve helped me realize that we can clarify a few things about why we think Web 2.0 is so important.

Hey fellas. Love your show. Been downloading for a couple of years now. Lots of great little nuggets.

I’ve been thinking about (but not really acting on) starting an online biz for over a year now and am interested possibly in your coaching course coming up in Feb. A couple of questions…

1. Cost?
2. Not to sound too much like a complete cheapskate, but how much more valuable is this course as opposed to taking great free info from your podcasts/blog or other sources like 4HWW or Pat O’Bryan’s Your Portable Empire? I guess I’m just looking for assurance that it’s worth the investment, as I have little “start-up” money.
3. Will I be able to access classes anytime (ie on replays) if I can’t attend live because of work or other commitments?
4. Is it worth doing the course if you haven’t decided on a firm business idea yet?

I’m leaning towards an info product that would help everyday people save loads of money (related to my current line of work), but worry that it may be hard to sell to people (cheapskates like me ;-) who want to SAVE money as opposed to MAKE money. It seems most successful online info products are more about helping people make money vs. save money. It’s a different mindset I guess. What are your thoughts?

Goals!!!
Guys – If I don’t quit my job soon, I am going to go crazy! I have a 6 figure job and really need to be pulling 75%+ (i think) of that due to baby/wife etc before I do quit (or have a very good plan/direction towards that with some evidence of ability to get there).
So, my question is – early on how did you guys set goals and timelines? I have not started internet marketing yet and am firmly in the learning stage whilst thinking of as many ideas/niches as I can. Do you have any guidelines or examples of what you did to plan timelines/incomes/business growth on the internet?

I think you could be at six figures in 90 days if you wanted to be.
That is only $274 profit p/day.
You can do that with one good income stream generated from a high-performing $10 to $15 digital product on ebay. It’s like 25 copies sold in a day or something after the ebay fees are taken out.
If you don’t think you can squeeze that much juice out of one product (you can if you tune it up ALL the way) then just make two. Each product then only has to perform half as well.
I currently have 40 different “winner” product ideas that are proven but I don’t have the time to dedicate to creating them yet. Email me if you want and I’ll give you a couple to point you in the right direction.

I am in the same position as Brett and I feel like I am spinning my wheels. I have just started einfohut.com (no site is up yet) and I own all got.com (i.e gotsaints, gotpackers, etc) sites with a friend but I am not seeing the money roll in. I don’t know where to go from here on marketing information. Any hints or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I am desperately waiting for the next release of the IBM training course. I NEED TO QUIT MY JOB!!! I know this stuff works…80 G’s a year and I can walk!!

Hey Guys – great podcast as always!

I wanted pass a comment regarding the “Freedom of location”. I believe Sterling said that he couldn’t consider this as a option right not cause his “two little ones” would miss him. My follow-up question to that is “Why don’t you take the family?” The reason I say that is my family and I (3 daughters under the age of 5) are just finalizing our plans to spend a year overseas in Thailand. My brother-in-law (Also an Internet entrepreneur) actually has been living in multiple worldwide locations with a young family while continuing to run a highly successful web business. He currently lives in Thailand and has his school-age kids attending a great International school there.

You had mentioned that Argentina is about half the cost of living in the States – Thailand is less then a 1/3 of the cost.

Anyways, just wanted to mentioned that you don’t just have to live abroad before kids – kids are adaptable and will thrive anywhere IF they have great parents of course!

I was really disappointed to read your latest information about your upcoming new course, “VIP passes” and all.

You sound like a couple huksters–all the “Hurry! Get it now and save!…time is critical…act boldly and save!!!”–hype is painful to read. Early on you guys were genuine, nice, straight forward guys. Now you sound like so many of the other internet come-ons and I am embarrassed for you. What happened?

Yeah, the downside of writing copy is you have to write it in a way that sells. That copy works time and time again. We both would love to just say:

“Hey everyone, you know us, we are all about the good content. We are going to have a coaching course. It’ll be great. We’ll help you start an internet business… We’ll simply teach you what we did to give our job the boot and make a great living on the internet. Enough said, if you are interested and have a chance, sign up. That’s all. No pressure or anything, just sign up whenever you like… You can pay whenever you like.. or not at all, shucks, we are alive to teach you to make money, forget us!”

That would be great, then 3 guys would sign up and Jay and I would be asking if you’d like fries with that. Would you really want to learn from people that don’t get super excited about their product and business?

We didn’t even hype up our copy more than our excitement for the course. There are so many hype tactics NOT used, they could fill a book. We just talked about the stuff we really offer. If it sounds like we are excited about our course, it is because WE ARE! We live for this stuff. We love it, which is why we do it. If we didn’t love teaching we would just make a bunch of credit report, fat busting diet pills and get out of debt sites and be done with it.

That feeling is what was expressed in the sales letter, no apologies for that!

Hey guys,

I have to admit, I was kind of thinking the same thing as John when I read your copy yesterday. At first I was thinking these guys are reading way too much Dan Kennedy. And they’re preaching to the converted. I’m sure 9/10 people that apply for your course already listen to your podcast and don’t need to see sales copy like this. I was wondering if it was meant to be a little tongue-’n-cheek.

But overall, I wasn’t overly insulted and thought it was a damn good sales pitch. I thought it did have some “realness” to it and was glad to see some of your usual sense of humour. I think it’s a good rule to never take yourself too seriously. I always thought it’s kind of ironic teaching people how to market and sell people and then using the same tactics on them! At least you didn’t use BIG RED LETTERS.

I think you’ve provided heeps of free info already and deserve to be paid for it once in a while.

Looking forward to doing your course (God & wife willing) and then promoting you to my community.

Hi Guys,

What an excellent tip to use WordPress for setting up web sites.

Early last year after researching several alternatives I decided to use WordPress to build our two sites. When I told a number of people what I was doing they thought it was a bad choice to use a blog platform to build a conventional site. I kept saying that it could do pages, menus and manage the content, not to mention it having a blog integrated from the outset. I look back now and am still pleased with the choice.

You wouldn’t know our sites are built around a blog platform—and in many ways that is the point.

I totally agree. WordPress is ultimately just a content management system (that is very flexible and powerful). You can use it for much more than a blog. I know people who run membership sites using it.

If anyone wants to see a site that runs on WordPress but is not a “blog look”, clock on Derek Pollard’s name in his comment above.

The other site I’ve done with WordPress, that was also my first web site is http://www.kimotaprime.com, which is a placeholder for our company domain at the moment. To create the site I bought one of the few templates I could find at the time that used WordPress pages with a navigation menu. I didn’t know anything about WordPress and not much more CSS and HTML so I set about making it more what I wanted as a necessity and a learning exercise.

It turned out that the template wasn’t actually implemented very well (more style over substance), so I used what I’d learnt to build http://www.screenrest.com almost from the ground up. The site content is actually due for a significant revision in a few weeks time to better focus on our market niches.

WordPress pages are very flexible and powerful for creating static site content, but are just as easy to work with as the blog posts.

By the way, I really like that your site sends out notifications of new comments, a great feature for keeping a conversation going.
