Hey Tom, I'm so glad I came across your article! I'm in the market for a VA and I was looking for some standard criteria; I know a VA would help me but I wasn't quite sure what to look for yet. Looking forward to part 2 of this piece!

Well put Paul. That is why it is important to have systems and procedures in place to prevent creating more work for yourself.

These sensible steps are just as good for creating briefs for one-off pieces of work through freelancing sites, especially around making the expectations abundantly clear.

Outsourcing is essential when you are looking to grow, but you definitely need to follow a cautious approach or you can end up creating more work for yourself - ouch!

Thanks Tom. I hired a VA a couple years ago and swore it off until recently... which is how I found this page. I'm definitely going to take you advice on the hiring test - hopefully I'll get a better VA this time around.

Cheers

Hey Chris,

I can tell you that we pay once a month for most and sometimes 2 times a month, if they request it. We also make the VAs be totally responsible for sending us an invoice. They have to be the ones to make sure we pay them!

Tom, thank you for this detailed and useful information. Why do you suggest only paying bi-monthly?
