I’m writing this post on my Dell laptop that has served as my primary business tool now for three years. I’ve been a laptop guy for several years. I guess my “freedom” mindset extends to not feeling tethered to a desk when I work (though the truth is that 98% of the time I do just work from my desk).

But now my laptop is dying. I’ve already ordered a new system from iBuyPower after extensive research.

I tend to be a maximizer when making decisions (i.e. I have to look at every possibility before making a decision). It’s a product of my perfectionism, something I’m working on lately and definitely a topic for another blog post.

So I need your help. I still have two things to purchase for my system. Well, actually three.

My first short film (a side hobby I have) was edited on an iMac using Final Cut. I’ve decided to switch to a PC-based system now for editing. I know there are Apple fans who will read this and think I’m crazy. I have a number of reasons for switching.

1. I would have to buy a brand new Mac Pro to run the latest Final Cut
2. I’d rather invest in one super awesome computer for both business and video editing than have to maintain two mega computers
3. Adobe and Vegas seem to work better with the clips from my Canon 60D
4. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the new Final Cut

It’s been two years since we last launched an internet business coaching program. In 2009, a select group of students got to work with us directly on their internet businesses. Since then we’ve been busy launching Academy 2.0 and working on other projects for IBM.

Recently we’ve been considering launching a new coaching program. We’re still not entirely sure if we’ll launch a coaching program or what it will look like, but your feedback has been very helpful as we consider the options. Let’s take a look at the results.

95% Said Yes

First we wanted to know whether or not you wanted to have access to coaching with us. Based on feedback and talking to students over the last couple years, we had hunch that you did. But it’s best to let the numbers tell the real story. And these numbers were very exciting.

Question: Would you be interested in coaching with Sterling and Jay?

There’s a clear demand for coaching with me and Sterling. The numbers are very compelling. That’s got to be one of the highest numbers I’ve seen showing interest in a product.

A Surprising Result

One of the most important things to determine before launching a new product is what level of experience it should be targeted at. Coaching programs are much more effective when everyone participating is at similar levels of experience.

So we wanted to know the experience level of our audience members. The findings were very interesting.

Question: Which of the following best describes you?

The first answer indicates someone that is a beginner, the middle two answers are intermediate experience and the last one indicates advanced experience.

For a long time we’ve operated as though the vast majority of our audience were beginners. As you can see from the results, we actually have a large group of people that are already making money or well on their way.

The first insight from this is that it’s important to regularly survey your audience. Things are always changing. Never make assumptions.

The second insight is very exciting. The IBM audience is growing and progressing with time.

Since we started our show six years ago, more and more of our audience are finding success online which is fantastic! The first time we interviewed our audience back in 2006, the number of beginners was over 70%. The new numbers show clear progress.

The third insight is that there’s clearly a need for at least two levels of coaching to fulfill the differing needs of our audience.

Giving You What You Want

We have a long list of ideas, features, formats and benefits that we could use in a coaching program. To offer the best value, we wanted  to find out the key benefits that you want most.

We had everyone rate a list of benefits with a four-star system to indicate which you wanted most. Here’s how you rated each.

It’s clear that people want personalized feedback, access to us for guidance, specific action plans and additional training to help them move forward to the next level.

Sterling and I always get the most fulfillment in our business from direct interaction with our students and audience. It’s thrilling to provide that one piece of information that might launch someone past an obstacle. We love seeing an idea spark or motivation shoot up as a result of an insight that we share.

So the good news is that what you want and what we love to do very much line up. For now, it seems that live in-person events are not as in demand. It’s understandable that people are hesitant to travel right now.

Your Ideal Coach

Probably the most insightful feedback came from the open ended questions like: what are the most important criteria for you when choosing a coach?

When we get to hear about your wants, goals and concerns in your own words it really helps us sync up that value we offer with what you need most.

A few criteria appeared multiple times in your answers. After reading through all the replies personally, I found out that you want a coach that:

1. Has a track record of successfully helping people make money onlinek
2. You  trust to lead you in the right direction and give you honest feedback
3. Gives personal attention and feedback that fits your own situation and goals
4. Gives you step-by-step guidance and training
5. Is available to provide answers to any of your question
6. Is “in the trenches” doing it himself and currently making money at internet business

I have bought a number of products and courses in the past on-line and have been on occasion less than impressed with the quality and value offered. However I was pleasantly surprised by this course, as the content was of high quality and well laid out. Also for the price I paid, there was a lot of information there.

Local and Mobile Marketing

In fact there was so much there that I am still going through it to get a proper understanding of it all, certainly the parts about marketing the peoples mobile phone (or cellphone, depending on which part of the world you live in) as I think that is going to be a massive growth market.

The part that really caught my attention was the section on QR codes, and I could quickly see that there was massive potential to use this for marketing all sorts of things.

QR codes now appear on this site, on the back of my business cards, and also on the leaflets of a friends restaurant too. It is the latter that I will be blogging about as we go through a brand new campaign to see if we can attract more customers to spend more in his restaurant.

A Bit Of Background…

QR, or Quick Response codes, are basically two dimensional bar codes that were invented by a Japanese car manufacturer in the mid 1990s to keep track of inventory.

They can be coded by the creator to include text, links to websites, E mail addresses, social media profiles and any number of other content besides. Here is the code that appears on the QR code page of my site:

I am now running a campaign for a client of mine who owns and runs an Indian restaurant. I will be writing about that in the weeks to come, and also sharing how we developed his campaign.

It will be a chance for you to learn from my mistakes, and if you’ve also bought the course, you can follow along and perhaps add some comments in case you have anything to add – I am all ears!

Today’s Tip

OK so for today’s tip, to start us off, what QR code reader should you download for your smartphone?

After much investigation and research, and ploughing through the tons of free apps, I settled for i-Nigma. It is free from the App Store (for iphones of course) and the latest version automatically opens the camera and scans the code, making it much quicker to use. So that is my recommendation here – no affiliate link, just a good free recommendation!

Next time I will be talking about the first part of any advertising campaign – discussing the concept, identifying the target market and getting the buy-in of your client.

Step 6:  Change your Admin User

“Admin” is the default user that is assigned when installing WordPress.  To change it you must use phpMyAdmin and then update your config.php file.

Step 7: Use a Strong Password

You’ve heard it before, but it must still be said.  Use a strong password, that includes letters, numbers, and even punctuation where appropriate.

Step 8: Choose a supported theme

There are a lot of WordPress themes available that are free, but before you use it make sure you can get help if you need it.  This also is an indicator that the theme will be updated and not become a problem when upgrading to the latest version of WordPress.

Step 9:  Choose Plug-in’s wisely, the fewer the better

WordPress plug-in’s are available by the truckload, but that doesn’t mean you need to use all of them.  The fewer you use, the better.  Plug-ins tend to be more vulnerable to hackers than your WordPress software, so hackers go there to infiltrate and take you down.

Step 10:  Hide your Plugin directory

Anyone can see a list of your plug-ins by going to http://mydomain.com/wp-content/plugin. To hide this folder, just open your text editor, create a blank index.html page, and upload it via FTP into the wp-content/plugin folder.

Step 11: Setup your Backup!

There are two things you need to backup, your database (all your posts and pages) and your design (your theme, layout, etc).

How often you backup is determined by how much you are willing to use. We recommend that you set your auto-backup for as often as you post.  So if you post weekly, backup weekly, etc.

You should also run an “on-demand” database backup prior to upgrading software (both WP and plugins), just in case something breaks.

In addition, plan on using your FTP to download your site periodically – especially before and after you make significant changes to your site structure, theme, etc (this kind of backup does not include your database).

Ask your host how often they backup as well, there have been times that we have been able to go directly to the host and have them restore the entire site from a specific date.  Some guarantee their backup, others do not, so go find out!

If your site is hacked, and you have a recent backup, you can have your site up and running in no-time.

Step 12: Protect Your Files and Folders

Setting proper file and folder permissions can make a big difference.  You may not realize this, but if a file or folder is writable, then it is also considered insecure.  Your host will have its own level of security, so you may want to consult with them.  In general, we use the following file permissions

-          Directories permissions of 755

-          All files should have permissions of 644

-          Theme files 666 (if you want to use the built-in editor).

Occasionally a plug-in will require something else to function.  You can review that on a case by case level.

The simplest way to change these permission is to use your FTP client, like Filezilla.

Step 13: Change to “No Indexes”

Most people don’t realize this, but anyone interested can browse your directory and see all the files and folders you have, unless you change your index manager to “No Indexes.”  If you don’t see it, then contact your Host support.

You can also make changes to your .htaccess file.  This is a sensitive file, so make sure you download it completely off your site, make a copy, and then make the changes.

Step 14:  Keep Your Software Current!

If you don’t upgrade your site to the most recent version, it is vulnerable.  It really is that simple.  If you can only do one thing to protect your site, upgrading your WordPress and WordPress plug-in software should be it.

Some web developers are concerned about upgrading to a new version without testing it with the current sites functionality.  This is a valid concern, but it shouldn’t keep you from waiting too long to upgrade.  We have had very few problems doing immediate updates, but it is not impossible.

However, if you have a very sophisticated site, then I definitely recommend setting up a test site.  Upload your current site into a test site, and simulate the version updates to ensure everything is going to work smoothly.

If you have a good Virtual Assistant, or Virtual Programmer, they can do the testing for you.  Incremental testing is the best approach.  That means you update one thing at a time so if something breaks you can tell what triggered it.

Regardless of whether you do a live update, or test the software first, you should do a complete backup.  This will give you peace of mind and save you from potential headaches that could come up.

Summary

Although, following these steps does not guarantee that your site will never be hacked, if you follow them it will strengthen your WordPress site security and reduce the risks.

Since applying these steps to our WordPress sites at the end of 2009, we haven’t had to repair any sites due to malicious attacks.

That being said, malicious hackers still break through and infect sites mostly because some simple security measures are not followed.

In order to protect our sites and the sites of our clients, we developed this 14 Step checklist to creating a hacker resistant WordPress site.

NOTE: Although most hosting companies offer automatic WordPress installation, we prefer a manual installation of WordPress, as it gives us more control over the setup.  For those of you who use an installations script provided by your hosting company, you may not be able to apply all of these steps.

Step 1:  Install the latest version of WordPress into a subdirectory, instead of your root.

Giving your WordPress its own directory will not only keep the clutter out of your root directory, if someone does hack into your site, your root directory is protected.

You can find instructions for a manual installation at http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

Some hackers target WordPress sites specifically, when installing WordPress, consider changing the default table prefix from wp_ as an advanced strategy for protecting your site.  If you use the Wp-Security-Scan plugin we mention later, it will also suggest this when evaluating your site for security holes.

Step 2: Change Your Index.php location

Changing your index.php location allows your blog to remain in the root directory, and creates a cleaner url.

Sign in to your wordpress site, and go to Settings, then General and change your “Blog address (URL) to the root url.  For example:  www.mywebsite.com.

Open your FTP client and copy the index.php file to from the subdirectory (where you installed WordPress), into the root directory.

Edit your index.php file to add in the WordPress subdirectory.  For example:

/** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require(‘./subdirectoryname/wp-blog-header.php’);

If you have questions about this, there is link right next to this field that will give you all the details you need to do this right.

Step 3:  Protect Your wp-includes folder

This step is simple, just copy your .htaccess file in to the wp-includes folder.  You may need to set your FTP client to view hidden files in order to see this file.

Step 4:  Protect your wp-admin folder

Upload your .htaccess file into the wp-admin folder

Upload .htpasswd into the root directory

Go to http://www.htaccesstools.com/htpassword-generator/ to create a password.

Edit the .htaccess file to have the proper path to your .htpasswd file.

Step 5:  Upload and activate security plug-ins

Currently, we use the following security plug-ins to protect our site.

Login-Lockdown: this plugin helps prevent “brute-force password discovery” by disabling the login function if a certain number of login attempts and failures are detected from a given IP address.

WP-Db-Backup:  this plugin will backup your core wordpress database and other tables (usually created by the plugins you are using).  You can schedule your backup or issue an “on-demand” backup when needed.

WP-Security-Scan: this plugin will scan your wordpress site for security vulnerabilities (most of which should be fixed by following the steps we have posted here.

Wp-MalWatch:  This plugin scans your site every night for signs of foul-play and will alert you where to go look if it finds a problem.

We are also evaluating WordPress Backup by Blog Traffic Exchange, as it will backup the upload directory, the plugin directory, and the current theme directory.  It is important to note that the database backup plugin we listed only backups databases, and that backing up the theme and images, etc should not be overlooked (see step 11 for more)

In this post I’m going to talk about the exact process I got through to be highly effective and end information addiction.

What is the PURPOSE for gaining the knowledge?

I used to just pulling in massive knowledge just to have the knowledge.  I would kid myself to think that the info was for later, for when I needed it, but it wasn’t true.  I was just addicted to pulling in more info and not having to take action on it.  I don’t do that now.

I must know the why, why do I need to read this?  Why should I watch this?  Why should I listen to this?  Personally, I might choose to watch a TV show like Dexter, purely for entertainment value, but I’m very clear on what I am doing.  I not longer get my entertainment out of reading 30 blog posts a day.  I want my business to fulfill the use I have for it and my entertainment to be separate.  As an info junkie there was no distinction.

The purpose of gaining knowledge, for me now, is to be able to make that knowledge actionable and is sure it is needed NOW.

The NOW focus

The first step in my process is to answer the question, “Is this knowledge something I need right now?”.  I try to stay very clear on where I am in my business.  I figure out, at all times, exactly where I am and what I need to know next.

An example as a beginner would be, if I didn’t have a website up, I wouldn’t be learning all I could about link building.  Link building cannot happen UNTIL you have a site up.   So, it would be an waste of time to learn about something like link building, since I couldn’t take action right away.  The next bit of info I would need, in this example, is exactly what hosting I should use and what blog system I should use.  So, I would dump the link building info into a file for LATER and I would focus on hosting and blog systems.

I skipped ahead in learning all the time.  Before I had a site up I was an expert at traffic, because I read about it all the time.  By the time I did have a site up much of the traffic info I had read was obsolete and therefor a total waste of time in learning.

If I start reading something and I realize I don’t need this yet, I quickly stop reading, which is hard as an info addict, and I file it for later.  I follow the GTD system for filing.

If it is something I can use now, I go on the the second process.

Taking Action

Once I have figured out that a bit of information IS what I need next, I then have to ask if it is ACTIONABLE.

Now I want the knowledge if there can be an action attached to it.  If at any time during the search I see that the info cannot be acted upon, I generally ditch the search and move on to the next question in the queue.  Sometimes I realize that my question is 2 steps past the action I might need to take and then I switch my search to a more basic question.

I am no longer interested in having a bunch of info in my head that would just be used for sounding like a ‘know-it-all’, but not have any practical use for me.  Like I said before, I would just search for knowledge for knowledge’s sake, like a junkie.  I just had to have the next info hit.

I’m speaking mostly business here, but I have also taken this process to my personal info gathering as well.  As much fun as it is to know some inane bit of info like, how many movies has Angelina Jolie been in, I’m less likely to gather that type of info personally, let alone in business, (like how many launches has Frank Kern made over 1 million dollars?  Why would I need to know that…).

I want to have the ability to take action the moment I am done reading a new bit of info.  That is the main goal for me now with processing information.  In order to stay highly productive with my time I have to be able to have very specific steps of action to take after reading or watching a video or listening to an audio about info that is the next step in my business growth.

This process has lead to much less overwhelm and very quick gratification, because I can actually put to work the info I just gathered.

So, the process I use to stop being an info junkie is to be clear on my next step of action, find and process info on that next step, and quickly take action on the knowledge I just learned.

It’s been 6 years since I have watched a traditional news program, 5 years since I’ve watched an entertainment gossip show, 4 year since I’ve watched live television and nearly 3 weeks since I have read over 50 blogs a week, listened to all of the 25+ podcasts I was subscribed too, unsubscribed to the 30+ email newsletters, and stopped consuming info like it was going out of style. I have truly been more effective and more happy since this massive info dump.

I wrote the original Info Diet, part 1 post 3 years ago, and I thought it was time for an update and a process you can use to stop information overwhelm.

The original cause for this info dump was ‘The 4 Hour Work Week’ by Tim Ferriss. That book has been the second most influential book I have ever read, the first being the “6 Pillar of Self Esteem” by Nathanial Branden.   ‘The 4 Hour Work Week’ helped me with a lot of mindset shifts, but one of them was how important my time was.  I was working 12 hours per day, minimum, 7 days a week and I started to check on why that was.  I found that the info diet cut that down considerably!  I had been an info addict my entire life, until about 3 years ago.  I talk more about that in the original Info Diet post, but here I wanted to talk about the upsides of that diet.

For the last 3 years I stayed to that info diet pretty much completely.  From time to time I would go crazy with the podcasts or the internet marketing courses I didn’t need yet, but I actually stuck to it on the whole.  What has come from it has been amazing.

Unclogging the Action drain

Before having a specific info diet process, I would start a topic, somehow get distracted by 3 or 10 or 23 other topics and never finish the first topic.

Being so distracted lead to complete lack of focus and of action, which was very frustrating.  Processing information that way was also very overwhelming as the info would just keep coming and coming and I didn’t have any way to process how I was going to take that info in!

Once I decided to cut out the massive clog of information, I was able to make a process for bring in information.  I was able to pick a few topics and completely focus on them from start to finish.

The Process

In the next part of this series I’m going to show you the exact process I go through to find and act on any info I’m looking for.  My hope is that you will be able to use this process to cut down on the overwhelm of information flowing into your mind and then focus on the correct info that can be acted on.

Signup for the http://www.onlinejobs.ph/ which is $49 a month last time I checked. They pre-qualify employees at this site. You can also find good people at http://manila.craigslist.com.ph/ which is free  but you will need to be cautious of your interviewing. You can track your VA using Google Groups and Google Docs. If you use onlinejobs.ph then I recommend gathering emails from each VA candidate and sending out a Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) email to all of them with your job posting. If you use Craig’s List just post the job and people will email you. Be sure to only except resumes from the Philippines because you want hire people directly and not through an outsourcing company from another country.

E. Items to consider during the interview process.

1. Remember the VA you’re interviewing is a normal person like you looking to make a decent living. Treat them with the same respect you expect people to treat you with.

2. Develop a time line for steps A through E. This will ensure you get through the hiringprocess faster.  The VA Hiring Checklist will help you through this process.

3. Full time VAs will give you a 100% of their attention. The part time VAs will take much longer to implement your tasks because they have multiple employers. If you hire a part time VA be flexible with the delivery dates.

4. If you cannot afford a full time experienced VA consider sharing the VA with someone else who you know or even a group of people. You can use Google Excel Docs with tabs to define what the tasks the VA will work on for each person in the group.

5. If you want your technology requirements fulfilled in the shortest time frame then you will need to hire a VA with three or more years of experience. You can expect the starting pay to begin at $500 per month. Junior VA starting salaries are around $250 to $300 per month. Junior VA will not implement your technology requirements as fast as someone with three years experience.

6. If your VA’s salary requirements seem a bit too high. Ask them to start at a lower rate and as they prove their abilities you can increase their pay in the following months.

7. Create an email rule that funnels all your correspondence to one folder for easier organization. This way you can keep track of who you are speaking with in one area. You can do this by telling your email client to route all emails with the initial subject line of the job post you sent out.

8. You may want to create an Excel sheet with the VA candidates that you are interested in. This way you will have all your notes for each VA in one place.

9. If a potential candidate has every technology under the sun listed in their skills set do not interview them. Look at the Job experience and ask them what technologies they used at each of their employment listings. Ask the VA to rate the skill set for the technology you are looking for on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the best. If the candidate rates them self highly for the skills set you are looking for ask them if they are will to prove it. The test will be contingent upon their hiring.

10. During your initial email correspondence with your VA candidate see how quickly they respond and how clear their writing is. If you think the VA’s email response times are slow during the interview process then you may want to move on to the next candidate because it will not be any better after you hire them.

11. If you have trouble understanding their writing then you may also want to move to the

12. Consider having a Skype interview to speed up the process. Then you can get a good feel for the potential candidate.

13. Do not waste time interviewing. If you see any red flags in your opinion move on to the

14. After you have decided on the VA you are going to hire. Ask them what holidays they will be taking off. I would expect at least 5 to 7 per year.

15. After you hire a VA send an email out the other VA candidates telling them that the position has been filled. Tell them you appreciate them taking the time to speak with you.  Then ask them to stay in touch.

16. Typically you will go through 3 to 4 people for every permanent hire. Clearly define your expectations, define your hiring funnel and set a timeline for hiring completion. Don’t waste time in any step of the process. Move quickly through it and you will end up having an excellent VA working for you.

VA Hiring Checklist:

Now that you have defined your expectations, created your job post, setup your test environment and read through hiring considerations you’re ready to begin looking for a VA. Now post your employment opportunity and follow the VA Hiring Checklist.

1. Do they have the experience I’m looking for on their resume?

2. How quick is their email correspondence?

3. Is their writing clear?

4. On scale of 1 to 10 how strong are their skills for each technology?

5. Are they willing to take a test that is contingent on their hiring? If so give them your test that you have already setup.

6. Are you satisfied with the results of the test project?

7. Are you happy with the time frame in which the project was completed?

8. Do their salary requirements fit the scope of what you are willing to pay.

9. If you are happy with the results of questions 1 through 8 then you have found yourself a VA that fits your needs.

Start by evaluating your current personal financial situation. Are you in debt?  Do you know what you’re spending your money on each month? Do you have savings and investments?

If your personal finances aren’t in the best shape, begin making a few improvements there so that you have a stronger foundation in place.  Tracking your spending is probably the single most helpful thing you can do to start getting your finances under control.  It’s amazing what a difference seeing just how much you really spend each month (and what you spend it on) can make.

It’s not necessary to wait until you’re completely out of debt or in perfect financial shape to start a business — so long as you’re headed in the right direction and you don’t do things that make the situation worse.  (Of course, it also depends on how risk-averse you are.)

Many people think that starting a business requires having money to put into it, but it’s possible (and often wise) to bootstrap your business so that you only spend a small amount of money initially.  You can use money that you earn from the business itself if you need to make further investments later. Bootstrapping a business often means being creative — and going minimal.  Internet-based businesses are ideal for this.

You don’t need things like office space, new furniture, business cards, letterheads, fancy logos, and promotional materials when you’re just starting out. (Or sometimes ever.)  You just need an internet connection, a little bit of money for hosting and a domain name, and your time. 

While you don’t need a business card or fancy office furniture to start a business, there are a few things that you should never do without when getting started.

Remember Taxes

Number one on that list is setting aside enough money to pay taxes every time you make money from your business.  In the United States, you’ll probably need to pay federal and state income tax, self-employment tax, and possibly sales taxes and local taxes.  Be sure to talk to a tax professional or the tax authority in your area to see what you’ll need to cover.

The Essentials

You’ll also need to take care of any licenses that are required in your area, and you’ll want to consider liability insurance for your business and an umbrella policy for yourself too — especially if you have a decent amount of assets.

Keep Good Records

Finally, be sure to keep good records for your business.  Your business and personal financial lives should be completely separate. Don’t pay for groceries from the business account, and don’t buy a new computer for your business from your personal account.  Keeping things separate makes tax time easier, and is a legal requirement for many forms of business.

At least a couple times a year we’ll fly one or the other of us out  to brainstorm big ideas and basically show the other guy why our lifestyle is cooler than his. And this time it was no exception.

But besides that, it contains our next master plan. We simply stuck to our usual M.O. — listen to what our community wants, then give it to them.

This is an excellent question and something that every Internet business should consider. It all has to do with the numbers. Here’s an example of how we determine how much we can spend to acquire each e-mail lead.

Let’s Run the Numbers

We are in the process of writing a new set of autoresponders for our e-mail list subscribers. This series of e-mails will have the purpose of showing the value of joining our Academy to convert subscribers of the e-newsletter into members of the site.

If we know how many of those e-mail subscribers we can convert to a membership and how many of those we keep within the first month, then we can come up with an important stat Value Per Subscriber for that first month.

So let’s pick some easy numbers to run the math. Let’s say within a month we have 100 optins and 10 of those sign up for the Academy. At the end of the month, 8 of those stay subscribed to the Academy.

We have made 8 * $97 = $776.

$776 earned / 100 optins that month = $7.76.

Now we should technically take out some operating overhead that has to be paid. So let’s say that we have 20% operating costs leaving us 80% of our new money.

$7.76 * 0.80 = $6.20

So our Value Per Subscriber is $6.20.

The questions now is: how quickly do we want to “cut even?” Let’s assume that we want to cut even in the first month. That means that we can spend $6.20 to acquire each new optin.

So the biggest things to consider are:

• How much can you net from each optin?
• How quickly do you want to cut even?

The Academy is still new. Essentially this will be the first time for IBM that we will start doing PAID things to acquire new leads (it’s been largely the free podcast until now). So we don’t have any actual numbers yet. I plucked the above figures out of the air for the sake of easy math. However, it illustrates the exact process that we will use for calculating how much we want to invest in acquiring each lead.

Take Action

Here’s what you should do now.

1. Use the above process to calculate a Value Per Subscriber
2. Decide how quickly you want to cut even
3. Use these numbers to derive the amount that you can invest in acquiring each lead
4. Track these numbers over time. Set goals. Test, track and tweak in order to improve your conversion.

The first thing we want to point out is that, although you can post links and direct market a little through Twitter, the best use for it is to connect with your best customers and get them to interact with you. If you develop a strong connection and relationship with them, your marketing gets a lot easier…and more fun! If you are to self-promotional, you scare all of your Twitter followers away.

The audience that you reach with your email newsletter and the audience you reach with Twitter are different. Your email subscribers are *interested* in what you do and the value that you provide. Your Twitter followers are *enthralled * with YOU.

This enthrallment is several degrees above interest. It’s very powerful. One of your goals as a marketer should be to identify the people who are enthralled with you and turn them in repeat buyers and evangelizers for your brand. Your Twitter followers have, in essence, identified themselves as enthralled.  They are hungry for any information about you.  Think of it as letting them behind to curtain a bit.  We decided what we will let them know and what is private before we started.

Use your tweets (yes, that is what a twitter post is called) to give them a glimpse into your life. Tell them the story of your life. Stories are very powerful, even far above any “resume” credibility that you have. When people connect with your story, they are very open to accept what you say and the products you offer. Let’s look at a couple examples.

On Internet Business Mastery, we talk a lot about designing your lifestyle-choose what you want your life to look like and then make your business and pursuits match that.

We both focus on different type of lifestyle.  Jay is more the world traveler and Sterling is more about where he lives with his kids and family, so we play to those things.

Jay moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina a while back. He alluded to this in his Twitter stream and immediately got a response of fascination. Not only that, it really raised the credibility we had since this was a powerful example of having a business that allowed for choosing a lifestyle of location independence. People now rabidly follow the saga of his travels.

Our niche and community dream about the day they have freedom over their time.  So, Sterling tells about being able to watch his daughters play in the middle of the day or take off to the beach in the middle of the week.

We also will give business tips or even just tell about what we are working on, but mostly it is about us as people.

Use your tweets to give your followers a glimpse into who you are and how you do what you do. Use it to build your “mystique.”

It’s good to have something more secure than a landing page where the customer downloads the product through a regular link. What if someone links to this page?! Your product would be flying out the door for free.

Well, this question came up in the Internet Business Mastery Academy Mastermind Forum. Jimi Gibson asks:

I would like to market [my] products online as .mp3 downloads. I see that 1shoppingcart.com will work with ebook and digital downloads. However, if I am selling on ClickBank, I’ll need a way to direct them to a secure digital download area from the “thank you” page without going through another cart.

Well, it’s no surprise that the Mastermind Forums are my favorite part of the Academy because I learn as much as I teach. Here are the suggestions that came back.

• DigitalProductDelivery.com – This service is compatible with Clickbank. They also give have features for managing your own affiliate program
• E-Junkie – This got several recommendations on the forum. They have a full shopping cart system including digital product delivery. They also work with a number of third-party sites including Clickbank.
• 1ShoppingCart – This is our recommended shopping cart solution. The only problem here is that it they don’t seem to have the ability to link their digital delivery with Clickbank.

If you need Clickbank integration, then e-Junkie was the popular choice. If you want an all around solid shopping cart and affiliate manager that also does digital delivery, then we recommend 1ShoppingCart.

And I’m not talking about a modified factory production car.

I mean those cars where a team of professional craftsman literally

Hi Jay,

I’m writing this to you confidentially (I feel like I can trust ya!).

As I was driving into work today, listening to you and your pal Sterling on one of the recent podcasts (as I’ve done many times the past month or two), I felt a strong connection and frankly support for what I’m about to embark on.

Today at 3:00 pm, I’m sitting down with my two current business partners and announcing my intention to leave the company I started in 1999. It will  set off a chain of events, some pleasant and some not, but ultimately events that will lead me to be able to start the next phase of living a life of freedom that you guys so passionately talk about.

It’s funny and ironic, I’ve already “done it” (started a million-dollar business as a naive, booted-strapped entrepreneur), so I know the struggles and triumphs that lie ahead. Most importantly, I have that confidence you suggest is so critical (which most people sadly lack).

When I started my business so many years ago, I was just a guy in his spare bedroom, panicking about where the next paycheck would come from. Slowly and steadily, through a lot of trials, highs and lows, I succeeded where many others failed. So I’m very proud of that.

But along the way, lots of things changed. The vision and values of the company diverged from my personal vision and values. The business has became another “job” that I dread coming into. We added structure, process, red tape, big payroll, big rent and big demanding clients. I became someone I’m not, frustrated and unable to express myself as freely as I want to.

For me, the biggest lesson—and one I’ll eventually tell others in depth when I’m back “on my own”—is that if you’re not staying true to yourself and your vision and values, it’s time to move on. And that means setting pride and ego aside and doing what you feel is right, for yourself and others. Just like I don’t believe “the customer is always right,” I also don’t believe the “captain should go down with the ship.” I’ve watched other captains (former bosses) do that, and it’s miserable for everyone involved.

So my partners will likely hate me, but maybe secretly or openly they’ll be relieved because they also know it’s time for me to leave. The mechanics of figuring out how I transition out of the company, and the payment terms, will create necessary unpleasantries. Sometimes life demands those types of events to get to a better place.

Another thing I know: there’s never a perfect, ideal or frankly even a good time to do something so crazy as starting over. My wife and I are a month away from having our second child (to join a wonderful, fussy, precocious 2-year-old life already in progress), the economy sucks and I’m not independently wealthy. But my wife also has confidence and the faith to believe in me. (Your wife sounds equally able to let you chase your rainbows and vice versa.)

Now, the pressure will truly be on as I decide what to do next. The toughest part is having to be patient and wait a bit longer; I’ll have to focus a lot of my energy on leaving the current business on a solid footing. I’m not good at living the life of the secret agent — having been there and done that. Plus, lack of sleep with a toddler cures workaholism pretty quickly!

I write all this as a way of leading up to saying thank you to you and Sterling. I really believe in the stuff you guys preach about having a Major Definitive Purpose (initial caps of course!) and applaud you for sharing your knowledge and passion and helping other people achieve success. Those are things I’m totally in sync with you on.

You probably already know the stuff you do works, and that you have the power to make a significant impact on other people’s lives (the ones who are paying attention). Thank God for the Internet, right? It is incredible how people can randomly connect to others in real, life changing ways. Stephen King (in On Writing) talks about the idea of telepathy that happens through fiction, and to me it’s accelerated online.

So again, thank you. When you sit down at the mic next time, know there are folks like me out there with tears in their eyes and joy in their hearts, growing because of your work.

Well, we’ve learned some important important lessons in the process. For example, here are some things you DO NOT want to do right before launching a big product (all of which we’ve done in the last couple weeks).

• Move from one state to another
• Go on vacation with no Internet connection for a week
• Plan adventure sports outings with your family
• Plan to see your mom as she passes through town
• Plan big dinners with extended family
• Buy a brand new computer on a whim and have to set it up from scratch

Now, all those things sound nice and we love doing any of them. These are all made easier by leading an Internet Lifestyle. We’re all about enjoying more freedom, but there are times when so much flexibility can get you in trouble if you’re not careful.

So, our advice is this.

1. Plan your launches carefully and well ahead of time
2. Clear your schedule the few weeks before a launch
3. Enjoy your freedom as much as you can, but realize that there are times to buckle down and work when your community is depending on your to come through

That said. We’re really excited for the launch next week and, despite the recent extra doses of fun, we battened down the hatches and put the nose to the grindstone to get it ready for the July 16th launch. You’re really going to dig it.

The new Internet Business Mastery site design is right around the corner. We’re currently working with a designer that was chosen from the Internet Business Mastery community. We’re very excited by what we’ve seen so far. Development and testing continue and we hope to launch the new site in mid-April.

Once it’s all done, we’ll share some of the insights and strategies that went into the design. In the meantime, we want to start giving you some sneak peeks at what we’ve got cookin’.

That’s where the yak comes in. I wanted to share with you one of my favorite new features (if we can call it that) of the site.

We’re big proponents of entertaining while you inform your market. And what’s more entertaining than a yak?

For those who are thoroughly confused as to why we’ve chosen a yak (other than the fact that they are the coolest animals on the planet), here’s a rundown on the yak timeline.

Late 2005: Sterling puts a random question into the very first Internet Business Mastery survey to make Jay laugh: Are you afraid of Yaks? Jay decides to leave the question in the actual survey posted to the site. Pandemonium ensues.

Early 2006: Internet Business Mastery listener’s begin to slip jokes into email and comments such as “I drink yak’s milk every morning for breakfast!”

Mid 2006: Sterling coins the phrase “cash yak.” For kicks, Jay creates a mock-up image of a yak on a stash of cash with the caption “I won’t settle for a cash cow…I want a cash yak!”

2007: Sterling and Jay’s yak humor takes a vacation as their shaggy friend disappears to his Himalayan home with no explanation.

2008: The cash yak returns after a year of intense Internet Business Mastery study, daily upper-body workouts and a trip to Polo Ralph Lauren. He explains to Sterling and Jay that he was tired of being “just a pretty face.” After intense contract negotiations, the yak secures his spot on the home page as the symbol of the ultimate internet business master and demands that he be given a name.

So there you have it. The origin and evolution of the yak. Below I’ve included a couple more shots. (I had to. It was in the contract negotiation, too). Now we need your help. What do we name him!? Let’s hear it in the comments. If you can’t think of a name, at least give us your best yak joke.

Well…things are changing around here. Internet Business Mastery is now a podcast and a blog (and a whole lot more but that is for another blog post).

Yes, you can still look forward to the same doses of audio entrepreneurship through the podcast feed, but we decided that we’re just teeming with too many ideas and need a way to get more of it out to you. By blogging on this site we can communicate with you on a more frequent basis. January 1st seemed as good a time as any to get things started.

There will be two separate feeds, one for the podcast and one for the blog. We’re still working on separating out the two feeds. We’ll post the blog feed address as soon as it’s ready. The podcast feed address will remain:
