Hiring your first virtual assistant (VA) is very exciting. You expect to double your productivity and free up your time allowing you to focus on the aspects of your business that you enjoy most. Prior to hiring your VA you should document what you expect from them and how you will interact with them. Like any new relationship you have to learn the best way to communicate with one another.

When I first hired my VA he was a rock star finishing tasks as quickly as I could give them to him. I had him emailing me weekly status reports summarizing his work week. I eventually came up with a weekly plan of having him perform default tasks such as search engine optimization (SEO) work. Over the next year we became very comfortable with each other and had built an excellent relationship. I was providing him with programming and SEO training. I also gave him project bonuses and bi-annual raises. I am of the opinion if you take care of the people that work for you they will take care of you. After a year and half the status reports were substituted with intermittent progress emails.
